Manual Linear Stage Selection Guide
Newport offers the widest selection of linear stages available anywhere. Furthermore, these devices comprise only part of a modular system of products that can be combined to provide virtually any required motion or adjustment. Due to the breadth of this product line, selecting the right product for your particular need can seem daunting. To facilitate this process, the following selection charts present an overview of our entire linear stage product line. The primary construction and performance criteria are listed for each stage type, along with the page reference where more detailed specifications can be obtained.

When selecting a stage, keep in mind the following factors:
Material
Newport manufactures standard stages out of two materials: aluminum and steel. Aluminum is lighter and reaches thermal stability faster than steel, while steel offers lower thermal expansion per degree of temperature change.
Bearing Type
Crossed-roller bearings represent the ultimate in performance, and are the best choice for heavier loads and demanding applications such as fiber positioning.

Ball bearings provide excellent performance at a reasonable price, and are the most widely used bearing type in our product line.

Dovetail slides are a low cost alternative, adequate for lower precision adjustment uses. Dovetails also feature good load bearing capacity and high stability, once set.
Modular Actuators
Most of our linear stages can be used with a variety of different manual and motorized actuators (fine adjustments screws, micrometers, differential micrometers, etc.). This modularity allows you to achieve the performance you need at a minimum cost. Stages that utilize modular actuators are indicated in the chart.
Vertical Linear Stages
These units supply up/down movement of a horizontal mounting platform. Some can be combined with other linear stages to produce adjustment in several axes.
