Product Detail

Modular tables utilize the same internal design as the high-performance single-section RS, RPR or RT tables. Modular table systems are available with end-to-end and side-to-side coupling for overall lengths up to 60 ft (20 m) or more and widths up to 10 ft (3 m). Modular table systems are generally manufactured as matched sets and sold as complete systems. Individual tables can be built separately but this compromises the flatness of the joined table system.

Newport’s modular table concept utilizes a unique joining or “doubler” interface that maintains strength and rigidity across the interface between individual table sections. Using doublers, tables can be joined end-to-end, side-to-side, or side-to-end, to create longer, wider or “L”, “T”, or “Cross” shaped tables. Although two-section tables are most common, Newport has constructed complex systems involving more than 25 table sections.

There are several advantages of using the modular approach. Very long or wide tables can be difficult to transport or install. Using smaller doubled tables solves these logistical problems without compromising performance. It is also possible to change the shape of the doubled tables in the field.

The ST series and ST-UT Series SmartTables are available in "end-to-end" and "L" shaped doubler configurations. The ST Series doubled table is a fully integrated doubled table with with factory installed IQ dampers The ST-UT series doubled table is a broadband damped doubled table that has the capability to be field upgraded with IQ dampers. Both the ST and ST-UT doubled tables are available in 12" and 18" thicknesses. The "end-to-end" doubled configuration is available up to 24 feet in length. The "L" shape doubled configuration is available in 4 and 5 foot widths and up to 20 foot lengths (see the specification table below for maximum sizes).

Doubler Configuration Table
   End-to-end  L-shape
Thickness (in.)  12 in.  18 in.  12 in.  18 in.
 Maximum Size (ft)  18 ft long  22 ft long  15 x 18 ft  15 x 20 ft

The doubler interface consists of 0.75 in. (19.1 mm) thick steel plates set into the ends (or sides) of the tables and welded on both top and bottom skins. One plate has an array of captive fasteners that matches the threaded holes on the other plate. Doubler pairs are precision pinned to align the table sections to an accuracy of better than ±0.002 in. (0.05 mm). When two sections are joined, overall end-to-end table flatness is maintained to better than ±0.014 in. (0.36 mm). Once joined, the combined table can be treated as a single monolithic table section. It can be moved or transported the same as a single table. Viewed from the top, the joint between the two sections appears as a 0.5 in. (13 mm) wide line with 3 in. (76 mm) long slots on 6 in. (152 mm) centers along the length of the line. Plastic plugs are supplied to cap the open slots after the joining operation is complete. Table flatness for 3 in. (76 mm) on either side of the joint is ±0.02 in. (0.5 mm).

Each coupling structure consists of a male and a female doubler with alignment pins.

Testing

Unlike other manufacturers, Newport individually tests assembled systems that incorporate double interfaces. This compliance testing and tuned damping ensures the highest quality construction and damping. Others simply join table tops of various sizes without testing or tuned damping the “new, larger systems.” This can lead to inferior performance since compliance and damping are a function of mass and size. Newport—through individual testing and fine tuned damping—ensures the best resistance to vibrations and minimal relative motion of modular systems.

Installation

It is a simple procedure to bolt table sections together. First, bring the two tops into rough alignment so that the alignment dowel pins engage and the fasteners on one section match the holes on the other section. Then engage and tighten the fasteners. Access to the fasteners is by machined recesses around each fastener and threaded hole, so that a standard 7/8 in. open end wrench can be used to tighten or loosen fasteners. Although it is easiest if one or both sections are “floated” on isolation mounts, it is also straightforward on other types of supports as well.

Assembly and disassembly is easy, requiring only open end wrenches. The coupled table is statically rigid and dynamically well damped.
